This is the question I ask every time I sit down to write: how does the reader feel? How will the reader feel? How do we want the reader to feel? How can I help get them there?
I will usually land around an answer after doing research. This could mean finding articles, looking at Twitter or Instagram feeds, asking questions of people I know or people who know the reader, and using my own empathetic skills, or trying the reader's shoes on for a moment.
This process may look different, depending on my level of expertise with the subject and the audience I'm writing for. For example, if I don't have personal experience with the subject, but I'm writing for a technical audience, I start writing using terms I can understand after doing some careful research. Then I work with subject-matter experts, managers or editors to tweak the language so it is a fit for the intended audience.
