In a class in Cambridge, and I wanted to start with something different. I proposed a word game that consisted of forming a “chain of words.” Each student had to say a word in Spanish that started with the last syllable of the previous word, but they also had to include a sentence to contextualize it.
Nico began with “perro” (dog) and quickly said, “My dog always waits for me at the door when I get home.” The next student took the last syllable and said “rojo” (red): “The red car I saw yesterday was impressive.”
The game became intense and fun when another student used “juguete” (toy) and declared, “The toy I bought broke in five minutes.” Laughter filled the classroom, and every time someone made a mistake, the others cheered them on instead of making fun of them.
By the end of the class, everyone had learned new words and had fun in the process. They left the classroom with smiles and a strong desire to keep learning in the next class. It was a great start that established a collaborative atmosphere.
