A Passion for Creative Media and Culture
Following a career in broadcasting in the UK, in early 2015 I traveled to South East Asia where, to cut a long story short, I am now based and have been for the past few years.
Following my departure from the UK, I traveled around Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand. In the early days I mostly did voluntary work because, although I had a small private pension, I wanted it to last as long as possible and the voluntary work provided me with free accommodation and meals.
I knew that I couldn’t get my UK state pension for another 5 years and that my private pension would run out before it kicked in. As indeed it eventually did. And, at the time of writing, I still have 3 more years to go! This is one of the reasons I chose to come to SE Asia. I had done my research and found out that the cost of living is much cheaper here and therefore my money would go further.
You may be thinking that voluntary work has to be physical. Well, I can tell you that it doesn`t. I had a lot of experience as a videographer and enjoyed social media. I therefore combined the two and helped overseas charities and other businesses with their social media presence by creating films for them focusing on their aims.
I also enjoy English language teaching so I then enrolled on a course in Bangkok as a teacher of the English language and, after a short spell in a Thai primary school, I eventually began to tutor online as an English Conversation Coach so that I could continue to travel.
Meanwhile, during this time, I was also building up my online skills in those areas I had experience in or was enthusiastic about. This allowed me to create a number of other possible online income streams. I had experience as a radio presenter and actor so I found platforms to sell my services as an online voice over.
