I used to read to escape from this world and write to create new, seemingly more magical places. Now I read to learn and write to share the beauty and the magic of the world we live in.
I grew up in one of those forgotten British seaside towns, where it was as if time stood still. We couldn’t afford to go on holidays and summers there largely consisted of grey skies and rain, but I was able to escape into other worlds by reading books and create new ones with a pen and paper.
When I left school I was unsure what path I wanted to take, in fact, I didn’t see any paths, just one large overgrown field. All I knew was that I wanted to help others and make them smile. I tried to find my purpose in positions such as performing, customer service and management, and although the work was hard at times, knowing I was making a positive difference to someone's day made it all worthwhile.
In 2015, knowing that I had a love for writing, an employer asked me if I could use my experience working within hospitality help write an article for an upcoming business venture of his. Not only was this my first paid writing job, but it was also what opened my eyes to the idea that I could do this for a living. Later that year I began my first blog, with little knowledge of the blogging world but intent on learning all about it. I continued to write articles for other blogs whilst improving my writing and finally, I discovered the path that I was searching for when I left school.
I began my blog, Raggie Writes in 2018, where I share what I learn about life, literature, and words as I go along. The blog opened up more doors than I thought possible. I found more writing opportunities, learning something new with each one and finding more passion for both life and writing. I used to read and write to escape this world, now I write to share the magic that I have found in this world.
How would I ever write about the real world if I had never lived in the real world? There is still a lot to learn but there are so many things out there to write about and for that, I am very grateful.
