About

I'm an information technology problem solving addict.

I began programming when I was in my mid-teens. My parents offered to help me buy a used car sometime around 1984, but I asked them to buy me a Commodore 64 instead. I worked my way through college to get a degree in Computer Science. Among the part-time jobs I held in college: lab support technician, help desk support staff, and student programmer for the central IT department at Clemson University. When I graduated in December 1991, I secured a full-time position to formalize a computer lab support unit within the Computing and Technical Services department. A few years into that, I (along with one or two others in the growing lab support team) began writing code to streamline the management of computer labs, and that basically summarizes the launch of my career.

I get a weird kick out of implementing and coding to standards and APIs, and solving systems integration and systems management problems, especially very specific problems requiring development of little utilities there just doesn't seem to be anything readily available (or available at all) that can do the job well enough.

While I do have some deeper knowledge of various topics in programming and system administration, I tend to be more of a broad, jack-of-all trades sort. I had a boss that would refer to me as a "white hatted hacker," but I usually just call myself a bit-twiddler.
