Some might suggest that "Science" is simply another religion, focusing on the dedication, single-mindedness, and fervour of its adherents. These are recognisable elements of religion, to be sure, but the distinguishing element, and the one that makes all the difference to me, is that there is no "faith" involved.
I can describe an exact process and set of circumstances, and anyone, anywhere in the world or space, can duplicate my results if they match the conditions. Consistency and repeatability are what differentiate these two disparate ideas.
There's nothing wrong with religion; members of religious groups have better social support, and consequently, they tend to live longer, healthier lives. We scientists, on the other hand, are a pragmatic bunch, and live by the credo "Prove it!", and that's the way I like it. If I need a longer lifetime, maybe I'll just go do some research and find a way to make it happen for everybody...
