Data taming for small businesses

My road to business software consulting began with an interest in the bits and bytes inside computers. I wanted to know how they work and how they run programs. From there I got interested in file storage and database systems.

After a creating a few applications with desktop database management software I became fascinated with user centered design. That is, I got interested in how workers interact with business software, and what features of software make it difficult to use and learn.

When I ventured out as database consultant I became attuned to how workers react to new systems and tried to put myself in their shoes. This helped me develop a design strategy that would benefit the clients I was working for. My solutions for small businesses include both business process improvement and user centered design. Now I consider good design to be more important than technology. Without good design any technology will fall short of its promise.
