There is an underlying energy that stems from my creative process in my current artwork; which has evolved over the last couple of years into a mixture of realism and expressionism.
I graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1992 with an emphasis in illustration. Immediately after graduation, I began working as an illustrator for a graphic design firm that specialized in medical brochures. I later moved into the field of airbrushing, eventually owning my own business for 10 years, where I created custom artwork specializing in portraiture. During this time I was consigned to do a wide variety of work for clients such as private collectors, small business owners, and local recording artists. Some of this work included portrait collections, CD covers, business logos and large scale murals. I have trained approximately 15 apprentices over the years, many of whom continue to airbrush today. Since closing my retail store, I have progressed into freelance work, illustrating everything from greeting cards to fine art portraits.
In my current pieces, I am trying to capture the spontaneity of the first stroke of paint, the beginning of an illustration, the birth of an idea. My new work has evolved in the spirit of the abstract and expressionist artists such as Georgia O’Keefe and Jackson Pollock with an undercurrent of popular culture and commentary like the works of Andy Warhol and Shepard Fairey.
