Work Terms
Here are some common terms and concepts in graphic design:
Typography:
The art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. This includes choosing fonts, adjusting spacing, and arranging text elements.
Vector Graphics:
Graphics composed of paths, which are defined by a start and end point, along with other points, curves, and angles. They are scalable without losing quality and are often created using software like Adobe Illustrator.
Raster Graphics:
Images made up of a grid of pixels. They are resolution-dependent and lose quality when resized. Common raster graphic formats include JPEG, PNG, and GIF.
Layout:
The arrangement of visual elements such as text, images, and graphics on a page, screen, or other media. Good layout design ensures clarity, balance, and visual hierarchy.
Color Theory:
The study of how colors interact with each other and how they can be combined to create harmonious compositions. Understanding color theory helps designers choose effective color palettes for their designs.
Mockup:
A realistic representation of how a design will look when printed or displayed. Mockups are often used to showcase designs to clients or stakeholders before final production.
Resolution:
The amount of detail in an image, typically measured in pixels per inch (PPI) or dots per inch (DPI). Higher resolution images have more detail and are suitable for print, while lower resolution images are used for web and digital purposes.
Brand Identity:
The visual representation of a brand, including its logo, color palette, typography, and other design elements. Consistent brand identity helps create brand recognition and reinforces brand values.
