(1) Task
Modify the capability of the custom-built Excel VBA program, Selection-Tape Match to accept the
changes to the ALBUM_CD and TAPES spreadsheets and execute the program in a manner consistent
with the existing program operation.
(2) Program Purpose
The purpose of the Selection-Tape Match program is to update records of song titles (selections) in the
ALBUM_CD spreadsheet with the matching Tape Title and source media format information from the
TAPES spreadsheet. This is accomplished by a spreadsheet comparison operation which includes
searching, comparing, transferring and copying for reference, matching song (selection) title information
and other data from between the two music list spreadsheets.
(3) Scope
User requires modifications to a custom-built Excel VBA program, Selection-Tape Match, written for
Excel 2010. The modifications are required to accommodate new data fields within the ALBUM_CD and
the TAPES spreadsheet.
The Selection-Tape Match program performs logic and comparison operations, decision-making, looping
and string manipulation between two Excel, TAPES and ALBUM_CD spreadsheets containing music data.
The TAPES and ALBUM_CD spreadsheets, loaded into a single Excel Workbook within the Selection-Tape
Match program, contain the song (selection) titles, album titles, Compact Disc (CD), 12 inch disc titles,
artist names, cassette tape titles and other information associated with the User’s music library.
The Selection-Tape Match program also contains a user interface titled Console. The Console function
provides the User the capability to initiate and terminate the program’s execution, examine comparison
updates and view spreadsheet comparison runtime metrics and User metrics.
Each time the Selection-Tape Match program spreadsheet comparison is completed, the runtime
metrics, User metrics and, most recent spreadsheet comparison results (Match List spreadsheet) are
refreshed and displayed in the Console.
The task involves new VBA coding and modifying existing VBA coding to duplicate and expand the
existing decision-making, looping, data comparison, string search, and string manipulation editing
functionality and runtime metrics for the two Excel music data spreadsheets, TAPES and ALBUM_CD.
The data comparison consists of logical comparison of spreadsheet cell contents to cell contents of a
paired spreadsheet. The string search consists of matching a specific pattern of alphanumeric characters
as part of a decision making operation and the string manipulation consists of copying text from one
spreadsheet cell into a cell in the other spreadsheet and/or entering new text into a cell. An additional
runtime metric to capture and display the spreadsheet comparison execution time is also required.
