Chuck the Coffee: Eugeroics is Here...

Attention all doctors, over-achieving students, and night watchmen: your lives are about to get easier. A new brand of “wakefulness” pills could soon be hitting the mainstream market.

Imagine swallowing a pill at 8:00 a.m. and heading out for 22 hours of work, all the while feeling physically rested and alert. Now imagine that the pill not only keeps you awake and active, but actually enhances your productivity and mental cognizance. Welcome to the world eugeroic drugs.

Originally created for patients with narcolepsy, the FDA-approved eugeroic drug Modafinil was created in 1998 to combat fatigue in a completely different way. Unlike traditional caffeine, which jolts a person into jittery, time-sensitive action, Modafinil specifically targets sleep-mechanisms in the brain. The result? Extended and painless hours of consciousness, as well as a proven a boost in mental awareness and memory.

The military, who openly uses Modafinil to train pilots on 40-hour missions, is currently funding Irvine, California-based company, Cortex, for the the development of a similar drug, code-named CX717. Modafinil’s maker, Cephalan, is also laying the groundwork for legal means of distribution to the masses. Currently awaiting FDA approval, Cephalan hopes to market “Armodafinil,” which promises even longer periods of wakefulness in a single dose.

Efficiency experts are abuzz about the future of eugeroics in the workplace. And those who face arduous consecutive hours of work or training couldn’t be more pleased. If used correctly, the drugs will benefit many.

Under the knife, most patients would probably prefer a surgeon who has the advantage over sleep deprivation or caffeine-induced twitching. Throw in the fact that eugeroics also improve planning, concentration, and impulse control skills - well - that’s just an added bonus.

For workaholics, the possibilities are endless. Eugeroics could potentially provide an additional 1500 hours of productivity per year. Over-achieving college students could double their load. Entrepreneurs could simultaneously start and manage two businesses. Research scientists might find a cure to cancer sooner than projected.

But here’s the obvious snafu: is it healthy?

Not exactly. Despite the seeming ease of brain stimulants, sleep should be understood as neither a luxury nor a roadblock. We humans are, after all, only human. We still need sleep as much as we need oxygen, food, and water. Our immune systems are not (yet, at least) equipped to handle an additional 1500 hours of wakeful activity; sickness, depression, and anxiety would be the most likely outcome for a eugeroics abuser.

Still, it might be fair to predict that horror stories of cramming for exams armed only with chocolate-covered espresso beans and Red Bull will soon be as archaic as Grandpa Joe’s boyhood tale of trudging six miles every day, in the snow, with no coat, to grammar school.

      Doctor’s Orders!

Carrying a small human in your belly for nine month is a joyous, magical, life-changing experience. It can also hurt. A lot. Your joints swell, your whole body feels like an un-popped balloon, and muscles you never even knew existed are brought sharply to your attention.

For some pregnant women, the thought of massage is unexpectedly conflicting. A massage? Yes! Right Now? Okay! But wait…there’s a large baby mass in my midsection…is that awkward? That might be awkward…

But, like prenatal pills and the mass exodus of shellfish and deli meats from your diet, what if maternity massage were part of your overall pregnancy regime? What if the doctor ordered it?

Maternity massage is far from a self-indulgent spa day (which, of course, it totally encouraged as well. Because you deserve it). In fact, maternity massage has a wealth of health benefits for you and your baby. Besides the obvious relief of muscle aches and joint pain, it reduces swelling, and significantly improves blood circulation, and increases important hormones like dopamine and serotonin, which are critical to your baby’s development.

Doctors are increasingly recommending maternity massage as part of a healthy pregnancy routine; in fact, fewer birth complications, such as low birth weight, are attributed to moms who partake in regular massage sessions.

When choosing a massage therapist, it is important to pick someone who has been specifically educated in maternity massage. At I------*, we have a staff of fully trained professionals, who love to make our moms-to-be feel comfortable, relaxed, and fabulous.

      Mental Versus Physical Differences

We humans come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are great runners, while others would be content drawing for hours at a time. Your brother or sister might love carrots, while you would scream and run in the other direction if asked to eat one. Just as we can’t control how tall we are or what comes naturally to us, we also can’t control whether we are born with mental or physical differences.

Some people are born without being able to see, hear, or walk. These are called physical differences, because something is affecting the way that their bodies work.

Some people are born with a brain that developed differently, which causes them to act differently. These are called mental differences, because something is affecting how their brain works.

      • People with physical differences have the same brainpower as everyone else.

      • People with mental and physical differences can usually participate in the same activities as everyone else.

      • People with physical and mental differences need support and friendship like everyone else.

      • People with mental difference sometimes have amazing talents, often in the areas of music or math.

      • People with physical and mental differences have all of the same emotions as everyone else.

      • It is cruel to make fun of anyone, but even worse to make fun of someone who has no control of their physical or mental difference.

Have you ever seen someone with a mental or physical difference and felt embarrassed or uncomfortable? This feeling comes from the fact that we are seeing someone act or look differently than what we are used to. It our human nature to have a built-in fear of the unknown. (Back in the days of the caveman, this fear protected us from things that might have caused us danger.) But our brains have grown much larger since then, and now the thing that makes us distinctly human is the compassion with which we handle our fears. You should encourage people with mental and physical differences to interact with you. You’ll be surprised how well it will probably go!

      Junk Food Marketing

If you think about food commercials that are geared towards kids, what are some things that come to mind? Have you ever seen a commercial for carrot sticks or apples? Peanut butter on celery? Doubtful. That is because food companies make a lot of money selling very cheap, processed, and sugary foods to you - the kids. They make unhealthy food seem so cool that you can’t IMAGINE not getting it!

Most of the food and drinks marketed to children are extremely high in fat, sugar or salt and have no nutritional value. In other words, they will make you overweight, tired, and sick.

      • Companies do a lot of research to figure out how they can trick kids into buying their food product.

      • Food companies do not care about children’s health most of the time.

      • Food companies spend billions of dollars to make sure that you buy their food.

      • Companies know how to make junk food look popular by including trendy sports, haircuts, and clothes in their commercials.

      • Food companies do not care about you!

Next time you see a food commercial, pay very close attention to how you feel. Does it make you want to buy the product? Do you think the product is cool? Even just paying attention to how food companies are advertising to you is a step in the right direction. It is very easy to be brainwashed by marketing tactics. Stay strong, and pay attention! Don’t let the big companies win by turning you into another unhealthy food zombie!

A million years from now, will our descendants still read works like Beowulf, Shakespearean plays, or even the Bible? Will they study any of the same mathematical concepts or scientific theories? If so, how will our data reach those future generations? It will likely be stored and continually transferred to the most advanced computer chip. Right?

      Wrong. Try Bacteria.

Professor Masaru Tomita and his team of researchers at Keio University, Japan, have develop artificial DNA with encoded information that can be added to the genome of common bacteria.

The four characters used in genetic coding (A's T's, G's and C's) work much like digital data. If coded in a particular way, different character combinations can represent specific letters and symbols which can then be translated to produce music, text, video, and other content.

But why use bacteria as a storage method in the first place? Because while books may crumble apart and computers may malfunction, bacterial information will last for millions of years – as long as the species stays alive. Genetic coding is so massive that information can be stashed away somewhere in the gene without affecting an organism's overall appearance and other traits.

And forget about a zip drive or USB plug. According to researchers, up to 100 bits of data can be attached to each organism. Additionally, bacteria can create new copies of the data every time it reproduces itself, as well as insert itself into different places in the genome, essentially saving and backing up the code.

Recently, scientists successfully inserted Einstein's equation “e=mc²” and the year he published his theory, “1905” into common soil bacteria. Of course, in order to translate the bacterial code, it must first be solved – a tricky feat for the average untrained eye. But scientists like Tomita are delighted to imagine a day when a species of superior intelligence will read the code as easily as a primer.

      Dear ( ),

In this down economy, I’m sure you’ve heard more than your fair share about the ongoing housing market crisis. However, I wanted to take a moment to explain why buying a house in this economy can actually be extremely advantageous.

Foreclosures are at a record high, but this does not exclude you from owning a house…in fact, it might be the perfect time for you to buy. To better understand why the housing market is in such decline and how you can benefit, let me provide you with a little background.

Over the last several years, lenders handed out loans like candy. Credit checks were not a primary concern, and borrowers often only had to claim that they made a designated amount of money per year in order to get approved. Many of these borrowers were also given adjustable rate mortgages. For the first year or so, payments on these loans were very affordable, under the premise that the borrower would gain better employment or earn a raise - at which point their monthly payments would increase.

Clearly, this did not happen. Home-owners were then left with increasing mortgage payments, higher interest rates, and declining property values. Because of the rampant problem, a new trend developed in lieu of foreclosures: short sales. Short sales occur when property owners sell their homes without profit and delivers the proceeds directly to the bank.

For the seller, the advantage of the short sale is that the lender usually forgives the remaining debt. For the lender, the advantage is that they save money otherwise wasted on a foreclosure. Your advantage is that you can now buy a beautiful home for a fraction of the price.

Due to the exploding number of short sales in the place of foreclosure, it is much easier to strike a deal with a seller in your favor, which will put you in a home for far less than you probably ever anticipated.

If I can be of assistance to you or if you would like more information, please call me directly at (XXX-XXX-XXXX). I look forward to hearing from you.

For the LGBTQ community, fighting for equality means more than seeking basic civil rights; it seeks empowerment.

Finding a means to help the LGBTQ population succeed in an unjust society will inevitably prove beneficial for all of mankind, and empowering them to have a strong voice will mirror the strength of humanity and perpetuate social justice.

From conservative talk show hosts to Bible-quoting fanatics (and a large number of citizens in between) there are many who continue to condemn the gay community. The same fundamental argument used for this condemnation has historically been used to oppress women, African-Americans, and other minority communities. Largely biblical in nature, opponents argue that the group in question pushes the natural boundaries of humankind (as defined by God), thus warping the natural order of society. This – of course – is very dangerous and unsettling to the opponents of minority rights, as it questions the very meaning and purity of their own existence.

100 years ago, it would have been absurd to consider the fact that women or African Americans could someday possess the same rights as White males. But after generations upon generations of suffrage and determination – of passing their fortitude onto one person at a time – they eventually empowered not only themselves, but future generations. This empowerment currently takes form in the fact that women and African Americas expect to be treated equally. Whether or not this manifests into reality is secondary; primarily, we are born into the ideal that we all have the same fundamental rights and opportunities.

Marriage equality is not the only adversity facing the LGBTQ community. Harassment and violence have become a social norm that continues to undermine forward movement. In most states, the LGBTQ community is still subjected to legalized discrimination via housing and family laws, and even employment.

We pride ourselves upon being the land of the free. Arguably, there is no U.S. Citizen of a particular male or female ethnic minority who does not have legal rights (whether this is socially recognizable or not). However, the LGBTQ remains the only minority who cannot enjoy these rights in many states. This becomes all the more mind-boggling when one considers the fact that each and every single U.S. citizen was, at the time of their birth, born with the same fundamental rights as everyone else....and may enjoy these rights until the particular day that one's sexuality is realized.

Throughout history, empowerment is a term that denotes pivotal social changes. However, social movements that aim to strengthen specific minority groups can prove difficult – even dangerous. Enabling minority groups to become stronger threatens alpha groups, and are often resisted by tactics such as fear, targeted discrimination and hate crimes.

Teaching confidence and self assurance to all citizens will begin to revolutionize the interactions between not only the LGBTQ community, but between all members of society. Encouraging the LGBTQ community to become stronger in a non-violent and threatening way has historically been the successful foundation for minority groups; it is essential to the success of their empowerment. Ignorance has largely been the root of suppression; therefore, empowerment must also include a tremendous amount of education and exposure.

True empowerment also extends beyond the group in questions. Members of society who are not LGBTQ must also offer support, encouragement, and celebration. This acceptance will help to eradicate the ignorance that continues to surround the gay community and begin to turn the wheels of legal and social equality.

Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock, by Eric Kimmel

Anansi the spider tricks everyone around him into coming to his newly discovered magic rock, where they fall asleep so that Anansi can steal their food. After observing this from afar, it is ultimately up to the small and shy Little Bush Dear who must move to action in order to outsmart Anansi and return the food to its rightful owners.

Based on a West African tale, Kimmel strings together the text in a rhythmic and suspenseful way, engaging the reader all the way to the conclusion. The illustrations capture the tricky, humorous nature of the tale.

Little Bush Dear is the story’s unlikely hero, after he carefully calculates a way to outsmart Anansi the trickster. Size or speed do not matter; thinking is a far greater tool!

Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, by Eric Kimmel

Hershel needs to get rid of the goblins who haunt the village synagogue, or else the villagers cannot celebrate Hanukkah. In order to do so, he must spend eight nights in the synagogue, where he manages to outwit them one at a time, despite his fear.

This book’s timing is exceptional, and the story is engaging and entertaining - with a spooky edge. The colors and illustrations correspond nicely to further exemplify the mood.

Bravery is a defining theme in this book. Though Hershel is fearful of the goblins, he continues to confront them - in doing so, his courage in the face of fear makes him truly brave.

      Rumplestiltskin, by The Brothers Grimm

After a father lies about his daughter’s magical prowess, she is taken prisoner and left to do the impossible: to spin straw into gold. When a small magical man appears and offers to help her, she accepts - after promising her firstborn child to him. The king, so impressed with her perceived talents and beauty, marries the girl and takes her to his kingdom, where she soon bears a child. When the little man comes for the baby, the girl must rely on trickery and spying to outwit him.

This story represents the dark side of human nature prevalent in most of the Grimm fairy tales. A girl is loved mostly for her beauty and magical powers, though she shows her intelligence when outsmarting Rumplestiltskin.

A cautionary tale, children may be taught the folly of bragging about untrue abilities. When a lie is told, it has far-reaching consequences. In this case, a father’s lie reached into another generation, almost causing his grandchild to be taken by a mischievous and suspect individual.

Was Sophie Real Or Imagined in the Book? Why or Why Not? Give an Example.

The question of Sophie’s existence begs the question of the entire book, wherein there is not one conclusive answer. But if pushed, I would argue that Sophie is imagined. If one were to follow Berkeley’s philosophy, then Sophie exists only because Knag wills it so, Knag only exists because Gaarder wills it so, and Gaarder only exists because God wills it so; one chain go interconnected, alternate dimensions.

However, the “truth” of these realities and existences depend upon an over-arching understanding that each alternative world exists within its own self-sustaining parameters. Therefore, each alternate world has its own memory imprint, and history—a collective unconscious (just like our world)—despite the source of its existence, whether it is an independent source, from an author’s mind, or in God’s brain. In each world, there is a cumulative reality and understanding of the norms. Even when we write a book or tell a story, the characters within that book or story share a common experience and understanding of their own world.

To conjure specific characters who are separate from this collective unconscious, however, is quite different than simply unknowingly existing in a sub-parallel world. Snag’s creation of Sophie is so far different from the norm of regular society that his own daughter is shocked by it. In our world, Knag would likely be labeled schizophrenic. Because Knag exists in the creation of Gaarder’s world, however, we are asked to suspend our belief and entertain the philosophical question of Sophie’s existence. No matter what—in any reality—conjuring the idea of a physical being outside of the parameters of that reality’s normal function does not give the physical being its own reality.

As an example, we are handed the fact that Sophie is a derivative of Knag’s mind. In other words, Sophie’s existence does not need to be considered—it is spelled out for us. The question is: now that Sophie understands where she came from, she goes on a quest for freedom from Knag…and ultimately devises a way to remove herself from it and into another realm of existence, where she will be “free.”

The very notion that we can escape the source of our reality is where the rational thought ends. Though it might be arguable that thoughts and energy can be transcendent…
