I am Linda Hull, a copy editor specializing in novellas, and novels. I have 10 years of experience in a variety of genres: action-adventure, young adult, fantasy, horror, mystery, science fiction, historical fiction, romance, and humor.
If you don’t need editing, I can also do a simple proofread and just correct spelling, punctuation, and basic grammar only.
As a line edit addresses the creative content, writing style, and language use at the sentence and paragraph level this is best done in the late draft stages of a manuscript. If this is your first draft, I believe you will most likely find a developmental editor more helpful.
My process is to read through your manuscript making corrections, suggestions, and comments as I go along using MS Word’s Track Changes feature. I examine your work on the sentence and paragraph level. I look for awkward or unclear phrasing, consistency of voice, tonal shifts, unnatural phrasing, lack of or too abrupt transitions, inconsistent verb tenses, POV switches, pacing, telling versus showing, words that are extraneous or overused, and too much use of “creative” dialogue tags.
A bit of developmental editing will inevitably sneak in and I’ll let you know if I find logic problems with your character’s motivations and actions. I will point out plot holes and scenes where the action is confusing or there if are inconsistencies with dates, technology, and events in terms of the location and time period.
