As a copy editor, I’ll do the following:
- Reorganize sentences and paragraphs
- Change content to improve flow and readability
- Flag continuity problems, repetition, awkward phrasing, and potential copyright issues
- Research facts and sources
- Check for consistency in style, word choice, sentence structure, and internal logic
- Improve content, language, descriptions, story line, and character development
- Create a style guide if you don’t provide one.
I leave lots of comments for you to change or add material in your own words because it's important that everything is cohesive and written in your voice. A copy edit also includes proofreading: a thorough check for spelling, incorrect word usage, typos, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, syntax, and formatting. I typically edit in Microsoft Word as that's the industry standard but I will also use Google Docs or Adobe if you prefer.
In the past, I have worked on a wide range of projects: fiction and nonfiction books, resumes and cover letters, weekly blog posts, articles, essays, etc., so I can quickly adapt to a variety of styles and subject matter. Feel free to ask me for a quote and a free sample edit! I offer free sample edits of the first 1,000 words for all new clients so you can see my work firsthand before committing to my services. It's important to find an editor that feels like good fit for you and your writing.
