From 1998 to 2007, I assisted physicians who were on the University of Minnesota Medical School admissions committee. Between 2004 and 2016, I was responsible for reviewing applications of all interviewing applicants at a family medicine residency program. We interviewed between 75 and 100 applicants annually for six positions. As part of the applicant ranking committee, I became very familiar with the characteristics necessary for this part of the application to be well received. Since launching my own freelancing business, I have written and edited essays for residency and fellowship applications in a variety of medical specialties.
