Atasha James, an education reform agent skilled at reengineering elementary and middleschools to work for kids and communities is a Principal Founder at Equitable Ink. Prior to becoming Principal, Atasha taught at both the Elementary and Middle School levels before working with the Teacher Educator Institute at The State University of New York at Buffalo, while completing her doctoral studies. Atasha has led schools in Buffalo City Schools and Anne Arundel County Schools before serving DCPS.
As the former Principal of Leckie Elementary School for the District of Columbia Public Schools she led over 60 Faculty and Staff serving Leckie’s 550 scholars to ensure all students achieved at their highest potential and have a love of school and learning. At Leckie 96% of the students said they loved their school and would recommend it to a friend! Under Atasha’s leadership Leckie’s performance on PARCC almost doubled other high poverty schools performance.
In 2014, she received the Rubenstein Award for Highly Effective Leadership. Atasha was a Mary Jane Fellow Inaugural Mentor Principal. She is among a short list of school leaders recognized for closing the achievement gap in both math and reading for three consecutive years. As well as outperforming other high poverty schools in all academic outputs. An in-depth report on education reform in DC shows Atasha’s school as one of few traditional public schools competing and successful in one of DC’s most challenging areas in the city. The Innovative School Design installed at Leckie under Atasha’s tenure ensures 90% of K and 1st grade students leave reading at or above grade level. In math, Leckie’s performance and growth are both above the national medians.
Atasha started running x country in 5th grade and hasn’t stopped. As a former Miss America contestant, Atasha is a founding board member of the Young Miss Buffalo Pageant and continues to give her time and support the development of young women from her hometown.
