I left the United States in 1996 to go check the world out. Long before I could finish that task, though, I gave in to the pleasures of the Czech Republic and ended up making a happy home here. I can now say I've lived here for most of my life.
It took four or five years to learn Czech well enough to start translating business documents. At the same time, a lot of my friends were FAMU students, and I started working with them to better understand and communicate their film projects.
In 2009 I began work as a journalist for the public radio broadcaster, Czech Radio, and in 2012 went back to translation with an eye towards playing a greater role in film production.
Since 2004, I’ve translated hundreds of Czech and Slovak projects — that is, treatments, screenplays, and films — and have collaborated on several projects as script consultant and publicist. As of 2019, the boom in Czech co-productions has meant more work than I can do on my own, so my colleagues and I have associated under Filmograf.eu to be able to offer more services and language pairs.
I feel privileged for every new film story that's shared with me and develop a vested interest in its well-being. Every time my subtitles are read by festival programmers or awards academies, it’s as much of a thrill for me as it is for you. ut
