About

Creative Content Writer

A South African (that is, native English speaker) now living in Latin America, I'm a former engineer, former business owner, and sometime chef. I particularly like writing about personal finance, science and technology, and small business management.

I enjoy freelance writing mainly due to the variety of subjects with which it brings me into contact. I'd say that my greatest strength is the kind of research content writing requires. If a topic is unfamiliar to me (or I recognize that maybe I only think I know something about it), I do a quick dive through a couple of authoritative sources to ensure that my opinion on the matter is valid. An education in engineering, wide general knowledge, and experience in multiple industries definitely help in this regard. From there, it's an easy task to draw up a structure for the article and fill it out with information from trustworthy sources.

I try to be a storyteller rather than just another content writer. I also tend to cater to consumers who are a little more educated than average - these are generally more thoughtful and more willing to research some topic or product in detail, as well as having higher disposable incomes. On the other hand, this also means that some readers find my articles a little too dense. If one of your requirements is that no sentence should be longer than 10 words and all words be under 4 syllables, I'm not your guy.

I also try to put myself in the reader's shoes: what are they concerned about? Who do they aspire to be? Where do they live? What life experiences may they have had? To do this successfully, it's essential that I understand exactly what my clients' goals are. As such, I may have to ask a number of questions before I can get started.
