I acquired my unique academic and practical skills though a university education and practical training as a trade tested artisan electrician. I have had more than thirty years’ experience to hone my skills. I am a registered professional engineer (Pr. Eng.) which gives my clients the assurance of my professionalism.
I have worked as a plant engineer, project engineer, consultant and educator in engineering. During this period, I worked in a number of different working environments.
I am passionate about saving the earth from the pollution of fossil fuels and have made a study of renewable and sustainable energy systems. This interest has grown through years as I have involved in renewable energy issues that have cropped up while working on mining and other projects.
A job in Tanzania entailed the commissioning a wood chip fuelled process steam and power generating plant which is part of a small isolated grid fed by a small diesel power station and a small hydro plant. In Tanzania I also assisted German aid workers in the design of solar powered pumping schemes for rural villages. I also did a feasibility study for the Lutheran church on a run-of-river small hydro plant.
In Madagascar I was involved in the commissioning of a 24 MW diesel power station for a Rio Tinto mine.. I was tasked to investigate running the power station on bio fuel oil derived from the seeds of Jatropha plant. I was also tasked with investigating running the power station in parallel with a wind farm to be located on the coast close to the station. On a small scale, the Jatropha seeds can be crushed with a hand press and the oil used to run a small diesel generator for home or small business use.
Working for the renewable energy company OREC I was involved in small hydro, wind and steam from waste energy projects. The wind turbine marketed is wholly South African designed and built the aid of Stellenbosch University.
